Toenails fungus (onychomycosis) is a disease that affects half of the people aged 70. Nails can be cracked, splitted or completely removed. They are being "attacked" by fungus called "adermatophyte". Good news is that this kind of fungus are treatable. Sometimes you might need medical care, but there are things you can do yourself to relieve the pain. Fungi inhabit skin, without causing any harm.

They can exist in the form of a yeast, or in small fibers. Because their cell walls are made of unique chemicals, and are completely different organisms, they can not be destroyed by antibiotics , which kill bacteria. It is true. that fungi are difficult to treat, but most of them are harmless.


Nails, infected with fungus have a yellowish or white color, and they are very fragile. People, suffering from this disease, do not experience any pain, but the tissue around the nail may be affected, which leads to infection, called paronychia. It causes swelling and redness around the edge of the fingernail, or toenail. 

Causes of Toenails fungus

Lack of personal hygiene is very important for fungi, as well as wearing socks and shoes for a long period of time. Other reasons could be:
  • wearing somebody else’s shoes and slippers
  • walking barefoot in public baths and near swimming pools
  • wearing wet socks
  • weak immune system
  • humid climate
  • abnormal level of skin pH


How to protect ourselves from toenail fungus?

It’s known fact, that nails grow slowly. It may take about six months, affected tissue to be replaced with healthy one. Be patient, and persistent in treatment. During warmer months, wear open shoes, putting your toes in the sun. Fungi,  thrive in moist and dark places, so:
  • keep your feet clean and dry
  • wear cotton socks (they absorb moisture)
  • clean the inside of your shoes with vinegar and leave them in the sun to dry
  • strictly control blood sugar, if you have diabetes
  • eat more yogurt (very good source of probiotics)


Should I worry if I have toenail fungus?

For most people, this disease only leads to emotional stress and tension. Although, it does not look dangerous, people with weak immune system, and poor blood supply to the legs, may have some problems.  At high risk are people, who have suffered from diabetes. They are among the risk group, where might arise some complications.

Treating toenails fungus with home remedies

Vinegar
In bowl, pour 300 ml hot water, 300ml. vinegar and 3-4 tablespoons of baking soda. Soak your feet, twice a day for 15-20 minutes. You can make compress, as well, to stay overnight with it. After 2-3 months (if you are persistent) fungus will disappear.

Tea tree
Tea tree oil is a powerful natural antiseptic, that can help in the fight fungus.
1. Get a cotton swab and mix a few drops of  tee tree oil and a few drops of olive oil, apply it to the affected area.

2. Mix equal amounts of olive oil, thyme oil and tea tree oil and apply it over the nails. Leave it for 10-15 minutes and "brush" with an old toothbrush.

3. The combination of tea oil and lavender oil has a very good effect. It is nice to warm the mixture slightly before, thus the oil will be absorbed better, by the skin.
Then you can sleep with woolen socks, so the heat will be kept and it will increase the effectiveness of the drug. Apply regularly  within a few weeks, fungi are stubborn!

Oregano and olive oil
The essential oil of oregano has very good antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, analgesic and antifungal properties. Mix 2 drops of essential oil of oregano and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Apply regularly, but no more than three weeks.
